Inside @love_this_old_house's Cosy Victorian Study
For content creator Rebecca Lewis, known to her Instagram followers as @love_this_old_house, restoring her Victorian home is all about honouring its period character while making each room work beautifully for modern family life. In her study, that meant replacing carpet with a floor that felt warmer, richer and far more practical.

With its north-facing light and period setting, the study needed a floor that could work hard without losing the cosy character Rebecca wanted for the room.
Choosing Practical Flooring for a Home Office
The room had previously been fitted with carpet, but it was not working well in a busy home office, especially with the wheels on Rebecca’s husband’s office chair. She wanted home office flooring that would feel more durable and better suited to everyday use.
“We decided that a hard floor would be a more practical, durable option for the space. Having heard good things about the quality of Amtico, and seeing beautiful examples of the designs on Pinterest, we felt this would be an excellent choice for this room as an alternative to carpet.”
A Scheme Built Around Period Character
Rebecca’s design direction was shaped by the room itself and the pieces she already owned. The study includes old mahogany furniture inherited from relatives, so the floor needed to sit comfortably alongside those treasured details.
Rather than trying to brighten the north-facing space, Rebecca chose to work with the room’s naturally darker feel. She paired a deep wood tone with a muted red paint shade, creating a layered, atmospheric scheme that suited her approach to Victorian home interiors.
“We’d tried painting it light, but it still felt cold and flat. Instead, we decided to embrace the lack of light and go for rich, dark tones to give a cosy, moody vibe.”
Victorian-Inspired Parquet Flooring and Borders
The parquet flooring was central to the finished look. Rebecca chose Amtico Signature Chargot Oak in a Small Parquet laying pattern, finished with a Piping border using Aged Oak and Chargot Oak. The pattern brought a traditional feel that worked beautifully in her period property, while the border gave the room an extra sense of detail.
As a wood-effect LVT, Chargot Oak offers the warmth of timber with the durability and easy-care benefits of luxury vinyl flooring.
“It has transformed the room! The colour is stunning and we opted for a Piping border around the room which we love. It adds a lovely detail and makes it look really special.”

Samples, Light and the Right Flooring Choice
The sampling process helped Rebecca make the final decision. She viewed different wood tones at home and paired them with paint samples to see how they worked in the room’s own light, a useful piece of interior design inspiration for anyone planning a home renovation.
“Lighting affects colours so much, so being able to see the samples at home was really useful and helped us to make the right choice.”
